Please be honest, this is not meant to be offensive, is this normal in a muslim family?

Is it normal in a muslim household for the mother to be treated poorly. My friend is muslim and after neumerous phone conversations, ive hear some dialouge between him and his mother. She is always bringing him food, and he is rejecting it saying things like " Maybe if you cooked a decent meal i would eat it" or "What is this crap, make me something better" Now his mom spends hours cooking for his family, and cleaning, and working full time. I feel sorry for her. It seems like she gets no respect, he even makes comments like some women are "lazy", well in my opinion, at least their happy! He seems very opinionated on how women should leave the house, and if his mom wasnt home to cook him dinner he would get very pissy. He says a women should stay in the home. Is this a normal Muslim home? Please be honest with yourselves and give me an honest answer?
